Attuned recommends selecting among these curriculum, instruction, and assessment initiatives.

Given high rates of unfinished learning, particularly in math and among younger students, research suggests the following initiatives may best ensure access to rigorous grade-level instruction and individualized supports. These initiatives represent a research-informed starting point, but each will need to be contextualized to fit a school or system’s unique strengths and gaps. Attuned also recommends specific deliverables within each of these larger initiatives and sequences them in alignment to the availability of ESSER funding.

High Quality Instructional Materials (Not Present)

If high quality instructional materials are not yet in place: Strengthen tier 1 instruction by adopting externally-vetted, rigorous, and culturally-relevant curricular materials for each content area.

High Quality Instructional Materials (Present)

If high quality instructional materials are already in place: Strengthen implementation of externally-vetted, rigorous, and culturally-relevant curriculum through developing or intensifying instructional systems and educator content expertise.

Assessment System

Design or strengthen a coherent assessment system and a prioritized suite of assessments that supports instructional planning and improvement (e.g., diagnostic, benchmark, and curriculum-embedded assessments).

SEL Programming (Not Present)

If SEL programming is not already in place: Adopt and implement dedicated SEL that is culturally-responsive and acknowledges the social and emotional impacts of the pandemic.

SEL Programming (Present)

If SEL programming is already in place: Strengthen and deepen integration of SEL practices within academic instruction in culturally-responsive ways that acknowledge the social and emotional impacts of the pandemic.

High-Dosage Tutoring

Adopt or design/implement a high-dosage tutoring program for a subset of students in targeted grade levels, performance bands, and content areas.
